Then There Were Four

Sun glinted off the highway ahead of us on the long drive from Nevada back to Texas. I figured the last place they’d expect us to go was back there. I couldn’t go back to Victoria to get anything, so I leaned on everybody I knew for money. Even friends from our old neighborhood helped us put together enough money to start over. We chose a different part of South Texas, but this time we lived under new identities. Careful to never use our real names on anything, we rented about 25 acres with a mobile home. We started over without so much as a box of salt. We had nothing except what we’d thrown into a few suitcases.

Having almost been caught, we moved with even more caution as I started back in the cattle business. It took a while for us to rebuild our life and for things to settle down. Careful and wary, we soon settled into a rhythm. I knew I could’ve made money fast on the rodeo circuit, but I suspected there was somebody looking for me at every rodeo in the county. The girls grew and blossomed under the Texas sun and when Luan realized she was pregnant, I was thrilled. A child of our own seemed to seal our new life, putting a stamp on it. Our roots settled deeper into the rich Texas soil. My cattle business grew and as months passed with no warning signs, we got comfortable. Secure in our new identities, we even made friends and socialized on a limited basis with a few couples.

With each passing day, Luann got bigger. Since the business was going well and with the baby on the way, she bought new furniture for the house, which now seemed warm and inviting. I watched her nesting, getting everything ready for the baby.It had been almost a year since we resettled in Texas. I pulled my livestock trailer behind my pickup as I drove onto the ranch of one of my friends one afternoon. The first thing I noticed was a rental car parked there. It was unusual to see rental cars out in the middle of nowhere and wondered who he had visiting. I noticed him standing in front of the barn talking to two men.I parked and was walking toward them when I saw the expression on my friend’s face. Without saying a word, his expression sent up flares of warning. I stopped in my tracks and looked at the two men beside him. They were D’Angelo’s goons.I bent over and picked up a sturdy branch. I’d bash their heads in if I had to.

“Are you kidding?” one of the men said with a chuckle. “You’re not going to do anything with that stick! Now get in the car!”“No,” I said, heading toward my truck. While the men were distracted, my friend slipped inside to get a gun.I made it to my truck and peeled out, burning rubber, before they could grab me. They ran to their car and the chase was on. As a general rule, I don’t recommend a high-speed chase pulling a trailer, but in this case I had no alternative. It was hard to outrun a car while pulling thousands of pounds, but I was desperate. It took an hour, but I finally lost them.Purchase From Amazon

Evil men don’t understand the importance of justice, but those who follow the Lord are much concerned about it. ~ Proverbs 28:5

Jesus come quick, there is nothing left in society that’s sacred….

It is impossible to find anyone in the Bible who was a power for God who did not have enemies and was not hated.
