FAMILY REUNION
I heard the guard unlock my cell in solitary confinement. “Let’s go,” he said. “Your lawyer’s here.” Wearing an orange jumpsuit, I was handcuffed and led to a dingy little room that was like a palace compared to my 4 x 6 cell. I’d had plenty of time to think and I knew what I wanted to tell the public defender right off the bat.“I’ll do 20 years if Luann doesn’t serve any time.”
“So noted,” the attorney said, jotting it down on his tablet.Although she’d known what I was doing, the decision had been mine. We’d lost everything and there were six kids who needed her. I couldn’t stand the thought of her doing time.

During multiple trials, I was held in the county jail for 141 days.When it was all said and done, I was sentenced to five years and seven months at the High Desert State Prison, located in Susanville, California for writing $600,000 in bad checks. Luann was sentenced to six months.Before I got shipped out of the county jail, a lifer gave me survival tips.“Don’t get involved with anyone there,” he advised. “They’re going to come at you from all sides trying to get you to pledge allegiance. Don’t do it, regardless of the pressure.“Don’t have anything to do with the Aryan Brotherhood, which is the white group. If you do, they’d tell you to fight the blacks and you’d be told to kill. Be especially careful of the Hell’s Angels. They’re demons. Don’t even mention their name.“The Mexicans have blue handkerchiefs and the Hells’ Angels have red. Nobody in there will warn you but those are their signals.”
